The business skills crisis is growing and it will soon define the winners and losers in every business category. That might sound like hype, but the signs are all around us.  Two-thirds of millennials working for large organisations are actively looking for a new job.  Mindful of the tenuous hold they have over their employees, 46% of organisations in North America are allowing ‘Summer Fridays’ according to Gartner. This is an initiative which means employees are allowed to choose whether to work a shorter day or stay away from work altogether.   

The measures organisations feel they must take to retain employees shows that the balance of power has shifted away from employees to the workers. This shift to transient employment is causing havoc, particularly within leadership positions. 84% of companies will have ‘serious shortfall’ of leaders within five years according to BPI group

If we turn that stat on its head, 16% of businesses without a leadership crisis will have a massive advantage compared to their rivals. The losers will find themselves in a perpetual struggle to find and replace knowledge and leadership. Those who succeed will enjoy a collective intelligence and stability that allows creativity, innovation and effective working practices to thrive.

How can you fix employee engagement?
There is no single solution to employee engagement. Understanding what drives and motivates people is key. Much HR and management thinking is outdated, especially when it comes to millennials who think and work very differently compared to any previous generation. The biggest challenge is changing the company-wide mindset away from the idea that a competitive salary is enough. 

I’ve worked closely with organisations large and small to tackle and improve employee engagement. I’m mindful of the looming employee engagement crisis and want to help as many organisations as possible learn why it is so important, how to address using the techniques that are proven to start the dramatic culture shift that is needed.
